Traditional Native American weaving techniques and patterns are an important part of Native American culture and heritage. They represent centuries of tradition and are still used today in both traditional and modern ways.

The Importance of Weaving in Native American Culture

Beadwork serves various purposes in Native American culture and has both ceremonial and practical applications. Historically, beadwork was used to decorate clothing, moccasins, and accessories such as belts, bags, and headdresses. These intricately beaded items were not only aesthetically pleasing but also served as a means of identification, reflecting tribal affiliation and social status.

Conclusion of Traditional Native American Weaving Techniques And Patterns

The limited availability of resources and instructions makes it harder for individuals to learn and practice this intricate art form. Lastly, the cultural appropriation and misrepresentation of Native American bead patterns also pose significant issues. Many people fail to understand the cultural significance and spiritual meanings behind these patterns, leading to their exploitation and trivialization. These pain points highlight the need for greater awareness, appreciation, and preservation of authentic Native American bead patterns. Native American beadwork is a rich and vibrant art form that has been practiced for centuries.

Additionally, beaded items were often exchanged as gifts during important events such as weddings, births, and celebrations, reinforcing social bonds and expressing respect and honor.

A Staple of Daily Life, Rituals, and Traditions

Native American pottery has always served as a practical tool for daily life. Pots, bowls, and jars were used for cooking, storing food and water, and as vessels in religious ceremonies. The craftsmanship of pottery was not only valued for its aesthetic qualities but also for its functionality and durability. Both handbuilding and wheel-throwing have their own unique advantages and challenges, and many Native American potters utilize a combination of both techniques in their work. The choice of technique often depends on the desired outcome and the personal preferences of the potter. Get your creative juices flowing with our Navajo Indian Crochet Afghan Pattern.

The basket weave is a weaving technique that creates a checkerboard pattern by weaving threads over and under each other in groups of two threads. This technique is often used to create high-contrast borders or designs within the fabric. It takes a lot of dedication and patience to weave traditional Native American patterns. Traditional Native American Weaving Techniques And Patterns are very intricate, and they require a lot of detail work. This can be daunting for beginners who are trying to learn these techniques. But with practice and time, anyone can learn to weave traditional Native American patterns.

It is a testament to the skill and creativity of Native American artisans, who have passed down their techniques and traditions from generation to generation. In this article, we will explore the craftsmanship of Native American beadwork, focusing on the intricate patterns, artistry, and symbols that make it so unique and captivating. The significance of Native American pottery extends beyond its utilitarian purpose. Pottery was often decorated with intricate designs and symbols that reflected the cultural beliefs and traditions of the people. These designs could vary greatly among different tribes, showcasing the unique artistic styles of each group. Additionally, pottery was often used in ceremonial and spiritual practices, with vessels being created specifically for rituals and offerings.

The Evolution of Native American Pottery Techniques

Native American pottery is renowned for its diverse range of techniques and styles. Different tribes and regions developed their own unique methods, resulting in a rich tapestry of pottery traditions. Native American pottery also provides important insights into the history and daily lives of indigenous peoples.

With rave reviews from crocheters who found the pattern easy to follow, it’s a must-have for any crochet enthusiast. They have used weaving to create tools, clothing, and blankets for everyday use. Native American weaving techniques and patterns are diverse, reflecting different tribes’ unique styles and materials that they had access to. Traditional Native American weaving is rich in culture, tradition, and artistry.

Each pattern designed must include a total number of beads that divide evenly by three. Although commercial beading looms exist today at any craft store, original Native American looms either used the beader's own body or wood bent similar to a bow to form the frame. Like weaving threads or yarn, the bead loom has warp string separated with a small divider on each end. In the area of the country that would become New England, the lazy stitch took on a unique ridged appearance through use of a different technique. The same number of beads were attached to a smaller section of fabric, which made them arc up away from the surface slightly. This added a three-dimensional component to Native American flat beadwork stitching, which works nicely for Native American jewelry.

What Is Canva? a Guide to the Graphic Design Platform

canva's design

View and download all the Workday icons, illustrations, and brand assets you’ll need to create awesome things. Canvas is an open source design system that consists of reusable UI elements, resources, and guidelines that enable teams to create scalable, unified experiences. Editorial independence means being able to give an unbiased verdict about a product or company, with the avoidance of conflicts of interest.

Canva Tip #11: Negative Space

You’ve just leveled up and it’s time to look at a few legendary tips inside Canva. Now, when you present your design, you’ll have a YouTube video that will play back with sound. Now you can share the link with your clients, friends, or anyone else who just needs to see the design.

Canva Tip #71: Print Your Designs

From here you can upload logos, colors, and fonts that you will use in your designs. Now, when you’re hard at work on a design, your elements can be accessed from the sidebar. So instead, try to pick the right backgrounds, reposition elements, and change colors to help your design pop on screen without needing a shadow. Now before we get going, I should note that most of these tips utilize tools and features using a Canva Pro account.

Canva is home to thousands of free, professionally designed templates that, thanks to their drag and drop interface, can be customized with just a few clicks. Simply upload your photos to Canva, drop them into the template of your choice, and save the file to your computer. You can easily resize a design in seconds using the magic resizer tool inside Canva. Just navigate to the ‘Resize’ button in the top left corner of the screen, and select the different sizes you want to use from the dropdown menu. To animate any part of your design in Canva, simply select your element and click the ‘Animate’ button. There are a ton of built-in styles for your animation.

Keeping these distances consistent will help your overall design feel cohesive. In these instances, you can split the difference in spacing between other elements directly in half to create a connection. Now you can use the canvas to collect references and design just like an artboard in other high-end design tools like Photoshop. By scaling down your titles you will create negative space that will allow your overall project to breathe a bit. This first section of Canva tips will cover a few design hacks that will help you become a better graphics designer in 10 seconds.

Consistency will create a solid brand identity and makes your entire company feel more professional. If a project has a completely different colored design, it can come across as disconnected and it can cheapen your brand. If you do a lot of presentations, you may need to access brand logos from time to time. However, instead of running to Google to get brand logos, you can simply use the BrandFetch app to have an entire database of brand logos at your disposal. You can easily colorize the entire project by using the style menu. Simply navigate to the Style tab and select either your pre-defined brand colors or the built-in color pallets created by Canva.

Canva Tip #44: Making Presentations Funner

It can also be used to create a pretend prototype which can increase the perceived value of your designs. I also like using this feature with just a simple blank background. You can then import your QR code to a design and save it as a file like a PDF with the QR code on the design itself. Sometimes you may want to send a design to a client without any of the Canva branding.

Canva Tip #30: Resizing Designs

The templates inside Canva are awesome, but I find that it’s even better to go and find some inspiration from professional designers around the web. My favorite place to browse really good design work is Behance. However, if you are new to Canva, it can be overwhelming to learn the myriad of tips and techniques to get the most out of the software. That’s why I have decided to create a list of my 74 favorite Canva Tips and Tricks.

Canva Tip #42: Chat During Presentations

The best part is, your audience will see the countdown timer, but you can still review your notes without distraction. It’s a great idea to set up the chat at the beginning of your presentations to get everyone excited. Now let’s talk about some bread-and-butter Canva tips that everyone should know. Instead, simply copy and paste an image directly into your pages in Canva. Colors nearby each-other on a color wheel tend to flow together. The space between letters is called kerning, you want to make sure the spacing is even between all your letters or it can be hard to read or distort your message.

Colors are all based on a color wheel (pictured below). In a color wheel,  colors on the opposite ends tend to pop. Serif fonts come across as classy, elevated, and distinguished. That’s why you see them in high-end magazines and institutional branding.

If you’d like to download this freebie, feel free to snag it by filling out the box below. Looking to create a logo, Instagram post, presentation or even a video? Canva is one way to do all of this and more for free. So if you’re not happy with the quality they will make it right. They’ve also partnered with printshops like FedEx to allow you to pick up the prints locally as quickly as possible. You will probably need to resize your design to the exact specs of the print option, but once you’ve checked all your bases, you can print directly from Canva.

Well, to create a countdown for a presentation in Canva, just select any number 0-9 from your presentation page. Just go to ‘Share’, Present, and select present and record. From here, you can choose to have a video bubble or just your screen recording. This is a wonderful way to make informative videos like the one at the top of this article.

To ensure this is possible, every member of the editorial staff follows a clear code of conduct. There are three versions of Canva you can choose between depending on how much you want to spend and which features you need. Read on to learn everything you need to know about Canva, including what it is, what templates are available and the features limited to Canva Pro. If you’d like to join our free community with entrepreneurs and designers who can give you feedback on your artwork.

By forming a group, you’ll be able to move and scale multiple elements at a single time. So instead of eye-balling it, just select your elements and click ‘position’. From here, you can select whichever alignment makes the most sense for your project. Keeping all of your elements aligned is essential for helping your designs to feel cohesive. You go to the internet, find an image that you’re allowed to use, download it, upload it to Canva, and import it into your Canva design.

Typically in beautiful photography shots, you will have a subject with a blurry background. However, sometimes you will only have a photo with the entire frame in focus. But that’s no problem, we can make any photo look professional inside Canva.

Be careful about going overboard with handwritten-style fonts. I honestly recommend avoiding them in most instances. So a great tip is to simply remove any extra elements from your design. Sometimes you want certain elements to be closer to other elements to create a connection, like with titles and body copy.

The Best Whole-House Humidifiers of 2024

It can handle homes up to 4,000 square feet, and the convenient water level indicator ensures that you won’t have to worry about unexpected refills. A digital humidistat also keeps it operating at the precise humidity you set. A bright LED display makes it easy to set your preferred humidity level, and thanks to its 7-gallon water tank, this model can run for up to 70 hours before needing a refill.

If you need more fine and detailed control, you can always use the app. Some humidifiers can also release harmful particulate matter into the air along with the moisture, depending on the quality of your water. You can reduce the risk of this by using distilled or demineralized water, and by cleaning them regularly. The Levoit LV600S is powerful, quiet, and easy to clean, and it offers Wi-Fi connectivity and warm-mist capabilities. Plus, it’s the rare ultrasonic model that won’t over-humidify your room.

What about putting a pot of water on a radiator?

Once installed, though, whole-house humidifiers that work with HVAC systems need little attention. They connect to the existing electrical and water supply systems in the home. However, some reviewers note that the unit is very loud at the maximum mist level. Then use that solution to scrub all of the parts, including those hard-to-reach corners of the basin. If your humidifier is really gross, you can try soaking those parts in the same solution for 20 to 30 minutes. This is one of the best warranties we’ve seen on any humidifier, and it’s more than twice as generous as the warranties that come with our top and runner-up picks, both from Levoit. Anecdotally, we’ve found Vornado’s customer service to be reliable and responsive as well. On its standard setting, the EVDC300 uses about 8 to 9 watts of energy—roughly one-third as much as our other picks.

Models with filters require a bit more maintenance as the filters will need to be replaced about every three months. A transparent tank on the side allows you to see at a glance when the water level is low. Cleaning is also a breeze thanks to the dishwasher-friendly components. We noticed no limescale or mold buildup on the tank, though we still suggest cleaning the tank between uses.

Per AprilAire's website, this whole-house humidifier covers 4,200 sq. Menthol is a proven remedy for sore throats, and this humidifier emits the substance into the air for ultimate relief. The Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier doesn’t require any filters and works with Vicks VapoPads, so you can add soothing menthol vapors for added comfort.

While it may not be the easiest to clean since it has a medium-sized tank opening, this humidifier comes with a cleaning brush to help make maintenance a little less arduous. It’s also sold in larger and smaller sizes so you can choose the best one for your room size, though we found this model was just right for average-sized bedrooms or office spaces. It holds a good amount of water, has a night-light that isn't too bright and has two power levels so you can decide how much mist you want,” one tester says.

The Best Portable Fan for Cool Air on the Go

humidifier for house

The AprilAire Whole Home Humidifier is our best overall, HVAC-compatible pick because it’s a true “set it and forget it” model with minimum required maintenance. It is ideal for homes up to 3,600 square feet and occupies only a bit of space among your ductwork. While you can install this model yourself, it is a bit more complex than freestanding units. We also recommend contacting a professional to install this unit, especially since it includes an outdoor temperature sensor, which requires electrical work.

The top-filling water tank is easier to carry, open, fill, and clean than the tanks on other humidifiers, too. The LV600S comes with a 1.5-gallon tank, which should be enough to last an entire day. When it comes time to refill, there’s a lid resting on top that lifts right off—no need to deal with latches or those frustrating (and potentially leaky) screw tops. The built-in handle makes this tank more portable than other tanks, too. The fill hole beneath the lid is large enough that most people should be able to reach inside and scrub the limescale or whatever other gunk inevitably accumulates. The humidifier will maintain your preset moisture level, so you don’t need to worry about turning it on or off.

However, breathing in air that is too dry may irritate the eyes and nasal passages. This model is larger than the Crane humidifier but still small enough for desks. There is no filter to replace, and the humidifier comes with a brush for cleaning. Additionally, the humidifier is easy to take apart and clean — there is also no filter to replace, cutting down on long-term costs.

ABA Therapy: Definition, Types, Techniques, and Effectiveness

aba reversal design

We also describe how SCDs can address other features of optimization, which include establishing generality and enabling personalized behavioral medicine. Throughout, we highlight how SCDs can be used during both the development and dissemination stages of behavioral health interventions. Single-subject research, by contrast, relies heavily on a very different approach called visual inspection.

General Features of Single-Subject Designs

Again, the researcher waits until that dependent variable reaches a steady state so that it is clear whether and how much it has changed. Finally, the researcher removes the treatment and again waits until the dependent variable reaches a steady state. This basic reversal design can also be extended with the reintroduction of the treatment (ABAB), another return to baseline (ABABA), and so on.

aba reversal design

Steps for Setting Up an ABA Practice

It has been linked to improvements in key areas including language, social skills, and adaptive skills. This type of treatment may focus on helping an individual in a specific situation where they are facing difficulty. The individual often works one-on-one with a therapist, but they may also practice these skills in small groups or in community settings. We are now in a position to evaluate whether SCDs live up to our ideals about optimization.

Setting up an ABA Practice

The utility of these designs is derived from demonstrating that change occurs when, and only when, the intervention is directed at a particular participant (or whatever the unit of analysis happens to be [28]). The influence of other factors, such as idiosyncratic experiences of the individual or self-monitoring (e.g., reactivity), can be ruled out by replicating the effect across multiple individuals. A key to ruling out extraneous factors is a stable enough baseline phase (either no trends or a trend in the opposite direction to the treatment effect). As replications are observed across individuals, and behavior changes when and only when treatment is introduced, confidence that behavior change was caused by the treatment increases. In a reversal design, a treatment is introduced after the baseline period, and then a baseline period is re-introduced, hence, the “reversal” in this design (also known as an ABA design, where “A” is baseline and “B” is treatment).

Focus Areas of Behavior Intervention

If two components produce equal changes in behavior, and the same amount of change when both are combined, then either component is sufficient but neither is necessary. Over the past 70 years, single-case design (SCD) research has evolved to include a broad array of methodological and analytic advances. In this article, we describe some of these advances and discuss how SCDs can be used to optimize behavioral health interventions. Specifically, we discuss how parametric analysis, component analysis, and systematic replications can be used to optimize interventions.

aba reversal design

The step counts for all six participants increased reliably with each increase in the goals, thereby demonstrating experimental control of the intervention. This design has many of the same benefits of the multiple-baseline design, namely that a reversal is not required for ethical or potentially practical reasons (i.e., irreversible treatment effects). There are two potential limitations of reversal designs in the context of behavioral health interventions. However, we think that the benefits of demonstrating that a treatment works outweigh the risks of temporarily withdrawing treatment (in most cases). The treatment can also be re-instituted in a reversal design (i.e., an ABAB design).

They were interested in how a school-wide bullying prevention program affected the bullying behavior of particular problem students. At each of three different schools, the researchers studied two students who had regularly engaged in bullying. During the baseline phase, they observed the students for 10-minute periods each day during lunch recess and counted the number of aggressive behaviors they exhibited toward their peers. (The researchers used handheld computers to help record the data.) After 2 weeks, they implemented the program at one school. They found that the number of aggressive behaviors exhibited by each student dropped shortly after the program was implemented at his or her school.

How ABA Therapy Works

This research method yields a high amount of data that can be analyzed by researchers. This data can then be used to support a researchers hypothesis and/or give insight before moving on to a group research project. He researches the topic and consults with his mentor to discover three possible interventions that are sound and feasible. He decides to conduct a multi-element design where he alternates the treatments and evaluate how his learner responds to each version of the intervention in terms of eating. Whichever intervention produces the most food consumed will be the intervention that Tim continues to use. Janet, a BCBA and SPED teacher observed that her student struggled with achieving the correct pencil grip while writing.

Experimental control is demonstrated by the repeated changes in the dependent variable with each successive introduction of the independent variable. It protects against the inability of AB - type designs to demonstrate unequivocal control by the independent variable by showing the effects at different times. It is unlikely that a confound could repeatedly coincide with the introduction of the experimental variable.

The effect of an independent variable is easier to detect when the “noise” in the data is minimized. Several conclusions can be drawn about the effects of the various components in changing behavior. The data should first be evaluated to determine the extent to which the effects of individual components are independent of one another. If they are not, then the effects are multiplicative, or the effects of one component depend on the presence of another component.

In the context of single-case research, generality can be demonstrated experimentally in several ways. Direct replication means conducting the same experiment on the same behavioral problem across several individuals (i.e., a single-case experiment). For example, Raiff and Dallery [72] achieved a direct replication of the effects of internet-based contingency management (CM) on adherence to glucose testing in four adolescents.

A look aboard Disneys $6,000 per stay, immersive Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel

star wars cruise ship

Consider that across the more than 25 Disney World hotels, there are over 36,000 rooms. Prior to 2020, the Magic Kingdom, the most popular theme park in the world and one of four parks at the Florida resort, welcomed about 21 million visitors per year, which equates to an average of around 57,000 per day. Ideas for the lounge began to flow around the time of The Last Jedi and Solo. According to Handke, brainstorming with where the lounge would be set from a cantina, on a planet, or somewhere strange in the galaxy.

Special Offers

There’s a glossy plastic look that never quite lets you forget you’re in what’s essentially a very large, very long theme park ride. Galactic Starcruiser, much like Galaxy’s Edge before it, isn’t just a creation for Disney theme parks. The modern desire to connect every element of media and storytelling together is a part of the Galactic Starcruiser experience, and Disney is already working to seed the luxury liner across decades of Star Wars history.

Star Wars Nights Coming to Basketball Arenas in Our Galaxy

"You see the forest moon from 'Return of the Jedi' and Kef Bir, the water moon from 'The Rise of Skywalker,'" he said. In an interview with StarWars.com, Danny Handke, Senior Creative Director of Disney Imagineering, explained their goals in creating an immersive “Star Wars” experience for adults. We are total suckers for guest lecturers aboard Disney Cruise Line (we’d love to see far more of these), and Star Wars Day at Sea brought Amy Ratcliffe, author of Women of the Galaxy, among other things. Disney Cruise Line advertises “over a dozen Star Wars Characters–including Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO and Darth Vader” at Star Wars Day at Sea, and we were pleased to see some deeper cuts in addition to those high profile characters.

Price

On this Disney Wish preview cruise, the process to get into the lounge has been in flux as the ship tries to manage the demand. By the second night, it had changed to a reservation system as opposed to a waitlist. At one point in our abridged trip, a few members of my group were pulled aside by a crew member to assist in a jailbreak for a captured Resistance member. Together, we hacked a terminal, passed the brig override code across a room in a short game of telephone, and unlocked the door so that they could escape. Presumably, I could have decided not to help if I wanted to aid the First Order instead.

Instead of piloting the ship, passengers were able to partake in "Bridge Ops" training. Once aboard the ship, crew members greet guests and give them a brief tour of the central, two-story atrium. The sleek starcruiser (which, according to the backstory, has recently been refurbished) sports clean lines and a somewhat retrofuturistic aesthetic. Off the atrium is the Sublight Lounge, which offers themed cocktails and a prominent holo-sabacc gaming table, and the bridge, with its large, panoramic view of space. One of the most difficult things to understand for people who haven’t experienced the Starcruiser for themselves is what exactly is this experience all about?

At the current rate of Galactic Starcruiser tie-ins, I’d put even odds on the ship appearing in an episode of a Disney Plus show before the year is out. The all-immersive experience features a number of activities including learning the ancient ways of the lightsaber and then facing off against a training remote. Guests can also visit the starcruiser's bridge to learn about its systems and how to operate them, including navigation and defense, skills which Disney said could come in handy. Before we get to editorializing, let’s cover what was offered during the Star Wars Day at Sea on our cruise. But for Star Wars fans, there’s an exclusive experience that won’t be found at any other Disney property (or anywhere else on this planet). The Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge will be an adults-only cocktail bar that creates the feeling guests are on a luxury interstellar ship, cruising through outer space.

Boutique small-ship cruise line Windstar Cruises is growing its fleet, adding two 224-passenger vessels — both acquisitions from Mystic Cruises —  in the next two years. Star Seeker is slated to make its debut in December 2025 and Star Explorer is scheduled to follow a year later in December 2026. Breakfast and lunch are at the Crown of Corellia Dining Room which will serve "a lavish multi-course menu of both otherworldly and familiar origins" for dinner. If you're a Star Wars fan and love to cruise, Star Wars Day at Sea on Disney Cruise line might just be your ultimate vacation experience. Over the years, one of the most frequent requests from adults — both big kids at heart and parents — who sail with Disney Cruise Line (DCL) is the need for more high-quality experience options catered to adults.

Some of these were surprisingly elaborate (one dude had full Darth Maul face makeup!), but the highlight was probably hearing kids interviewed about their costumes, and them giving amusing responses. The crew of the Star Cruiser do a great job of making sure everyone has the best experience possible. They subtly guide you through the cruise, and are always available to help if you run into technical difficulties. … or dinner in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room, featuring a spectacular musical performance by galactic superstar Gaya on the first night. I expect there will be a reservation system of some sort going forward as demand will be high for some time to come.

Complete Guide to Star Wars:Galactic Starcruiser

Once settled in, make sure to keep an eye on the schedule in your Datapad. This will alert you to events such as the muster drill and Captain’s welcoming toast, as well as scheduled activities such as your bridge operations training session and lightsaber combat training. Once you’re settled in, it’s time to head back down to the Atrium for the ship’s muster, led by Captain Riyola Keevan (seen here on the right) and Cruise Director Lenka Mok. You arrive for this first-of-its-kind two-night experience at the Galactic Starcruiser Terminal, where your bags and your car are whisked away as you begin this adventure. As with everything Disney, costumes are encouraged, and a grand costume party is held in the ship's atrium.

Guests can play Sabaac (outer space poker) while enjoying drinks in the Sublight Lounge, compete in droid racing, learn about the history of Chandrilla Starlines and the Halcyon, make a model of the starcruiser, and much more. Special activities for younglings (7 and under) are hosted by the Loth Cat Crew. Exiting the pod takes you to the Atrium, the Halcyon’s “lobby,” where you’ll run straight into guests and cast members alike milling around, ready to draw you into the plot. In quick succession, I met Gaya (the visiting galactic pop star), her manager Raithe Kole, an aspiring musician named Sandro Alimander (who, like me, was on his first trip off-planet), and the ship’s captain Riyola Keevan. Everyone had a story and, more importantly, wanted to try to involve me in it.

Inside the showcase bar and lounge space, guests are transported into an upscale and sophisticated setting that is brought to life with show lighting and background music. As with Gaya, encounters with other characters, including the singer’s manager, Raithe Kole, and Captain Riyola Keevan, slowly reveal that all is not as it first seems aboard the Halcyon. This is Star Wars after all, and intrigue and revolution are in the air. The actors were uniformly wonderful, fully committed to their roles, and expert at engaging with passengers. The first evening is a dinner show that features galactic superstar Gaya. Performing a mix of pop, blues, and new-agey music, the “Twi’lek” singer had a wonderful voice and stage presence.

Despite the elaborate costumes and setting, it still threw me off balance at first. I had to take a few minutes to figure out how I’d be fitting into the roleplaying. Would-be Jedis get to brandish a lightsaber in a training activity aboard the ship. The blue-hued weapons provide haptic feedback when users properly intercept beams of light. Passengers also get to participate in bridge training and learn how to operate the ship’s navigation, defense, and other systems. Skills learned there may come in handy later if guests are invited to participate in a secretive mission.

What to Wear on a Cruise 2024 Style Guide

cruise ship clothes

With this post, I’ve put together 12 outfits for a cruise that will take you from excursions to evening easily, without stuffing your suitcase. You’ll see that all my cruise clothing can be mixed and matched to create multiple cruise ship outfits from just a few key pieces. Men may wear slacks with collared dress shirts or sweaters, but jackets are optional.

what to wear on a cruise – Your cruise packing list

However, a lot of cruises are dropping the mandatory “formal” night where you had to dress to the nines in black tie attire. Instead, you’ll find smart casual, or evening chic dress codes in place for dinner. In the evenings, some of our ships enforce a “cruise casual” dress code.

What to wear on a cruise – Tops

You’ll need to consider what you’ll wear on the ship during the day, what you’ll wear on port days, and evening attire- which I’ll cover in this post. In this post, I’ll share cruise outfits for women that I’ve worn on my past cruises as a Millennial cruiser, and give you inspiration on your cruise wardrobe. Avoid having to go back to your stateroom to change between pool and restaurant by bringing along cover-ups like sundresses or shorts and T-shirts. If you’re cruising to a destination with a cold climate, such as Alaska or parts of Europe, it’s important to pack clothing that will keep you warm on the ship as well as on shore. Even if you’re cruising to Alaska in the middle of summer, expect temperatures to range from the mid-50s to mid-60s (degrees Fahrenheit) during the day.

Poolside and Sunbathing Outfits

Of course, British Columbia requires a different packing strategy than a trip to The Bahamas or the Mediterranean. Even when cruising in the summer months, be sure to dress for the destination, not the season — layers are your friend here. Pack some thin thermals you can layer under your clothes if necessary, so you can spend the day comfortably strolling along the Inner Harbour and checking out Victoria's most notable landmarks. Don't forget a hat and gloves and some wool socks to keep your toes warm, too! When you're hanging out onboard, a thin, packable windbreaker or jacket will come in handy, so you can sit out on the deck with a cup of coffee, admiring the breathtaking scenery. Many cruise lines allow jeans for casual nights in the main dining room, while shorts are more universally prohibited.

In this post, we’ll go over the basics of cruise line dress codes, as well as ideas for cruise wear for sea days, shore excursions and dinners on a cruise ship. I’ve also included cruise packing checklists to help you plan your cruise outfits. Royal Caribbean's dinner dress code includes nights that are formal, smart-casual and casual.

Formal Nights

Don’t forget your accessories like a sun hat and a pair of sunglasses. To avoid your hat getting blown away by the wind, find one with a chin strap. Surprisingly my Birkenstock Arizona sandals were my go-to shoe on all my excursions. I even climbed a mountain in Kotor Montenegro in them and they were still comfortable afterward. Plus a comfortable pair of shoes you can easily walk around in for different terrain. Do you enjoy dressing up when on a cruise or do you prefer to keep it casual?

Clothing for Onboard Activities

Don't forget a hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeved sun shirt in your day bag. Pack extra clothes in a tote bag in case you don't have time to go back to your stateroom. Swap your athletic shorts for a flowy skirt or trousers, and trade your sneakers for a more formal pair of shoes, like chunky heels or loafers for a put-together look. Shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, sundresses are all appropriate day wear for sea days. If you’re by the pool, it’s important to know that bathing suits are not permitted in the buffet or inside the cruise ship, so make sure to pack a cover up.

Khaki pants or shorts with loose-fitting, short-sleeve, button-down shirts or even nice, plain T-shirts work well for men. Women might opt for khaki shorts or palazzo pants with a nice top or a sundress. In most cases, nice jeans (dark wash with no holes) will work well also. With that in mind, we've put together a basic (but comprehensive) cruise packing list, including the clothes you'll need as well as the odds and ends you'll want with you as well. After all, cruise rooms aren't exactly known for being spacious, dress codes can be confusing and luggage fees on airlines are steep. You'll also want to consider what you'll need aboard your cruise aside from clothing.

Make sure to opt for block heels because these are much easier to walk in while you’re at sea than thinner heels like stilettos or kitten heels and they won’t damage the deck. Check out our list of the best swimsuit cover-ups in stores now. You probably want to avoid denim as this isn’t the coolest fabric in hot weather. Make sure that you think about how your clothes will go together to create different choices. And, we’d avoid too many dark colors as they go ‘against’ the fun element of a cruise.

(In Europe, expect to see your fair share of Speedos!) If your ship offers recreational activities such as a rock-climbing wall or basketball court, remember to pack socks and sneakers. The Disney evening dress code applies to the main dining rooms at dinner. The dress code for Palo, an adults-only specialty restaurant, slacks (including jeans) and collared shirts or jackets for men and dresses, skirts or pantsuits for women are appropriate. It really depends on your personal preference -- whether you'd rather pack light and re-wear some items, or have fun with new outfits every day. You can get away with packing less by bringing tops and bottoms that are easy to mix and match, or shirts that can be dressed up at night and worn more casually the next day.

Need to add a few new pieces to your wardrobe before your cruise vacation? If you're taking family photos, tuxedos, suits, blazers and ties are not required but add flare and personality to a look. Get creative with kids who prefer comfort; put babies in a tuxedo-print onesie and young boys in an adorable sweater vest on formal evenings.

The best type of shoes are the ones that you are used to, which provide plenty of support. If you come across any cities with uneven pavements or cobblestones, anything with a heel can be difficult to walk in, so it’s best to stick to flat shoes, like trainers or sturdy sandals. On some of Royal Caribbean ships, it’s listed a dinner dress suggestion of “Wear Your Best”, which is described as “Say goodbye to Formal Night, and hello to Wear Your Best. It is expected that clothing should be respectful, this means you should not wear anything too revealing.

cruise ship clothes

This outfit can easily carry you into the evening, but dainty jewelry, colorful slip-on shoes, a Panama hat and swapping from a backpack to handbag will create a softer look. Your cruise outfits will be as fun to wear as they are to look at. The quintessential cruise style consists of chic but relaxed pieces.

Of course, you can add more clothing items or bring less, depending on the length of your cruise. If you’re going on a celebrity cruise or a character cruise, you may need to bring a few extra ensembles or accent pieces for themed parties and events. Be sure you know what themes and dress codes your cruise is preparing for you so you can pack the appropriate costumes and accessories. This jumpsuit goes easily from daywear to attire for Captain’s dinner on a cruise just by switching out the accessories for more glamorous options.

If you're cruising in tropical regions, pack one pair of shorts for every two days of your cruise (in cold regions, switch shorts for pants or jeans). If you like to vary your look, pack different color shorts or breezy skirts. Knowing what clothing to pack for a cruise can be especially challenging, and cruise line dress codes don't always match what passes as acceptable on board.

While you definitely can still wear an evening gown and tuxedo, most popular cruise lines have relaxed their dress codes over the last few years. You can still expect to dress up on a cruise, but there are more opportunities to dress less formally if you prefer this as well. At the once-per-cruise Captain's Welcome Reception, some men choose to wear a jacket (though ties are not expected). There is also a Polynesian Night once every sailing, when passengers are encouraged to wear Polynesian-style attire, so pull out your tropical shirts and dresses. For sea days when traveling in a warmer climate, you'll definitely want a swimsuit if you plan to take advantage of the onboard water park. However, if you're cruising through a colder region like Canada, you'll want a jacket and some warm layers, so you can stay comfortable on deck.

List of largest cruise ships Wikipedia

what's the biggest cruise ship in the world

Harmony of the Seas is the third ship in the Oasis Class and is 226,963 GT’s. She carries 5,479 passengers (based on two per cabin) with a total guest capacity of 6,687. Currently the second largest cruise ship in the world, Wonder of the Seas will be demoted to third after Utopia of the Seas launches in July 2024. Worldwide, the cruise industry has been one of the hardest hit by delays and suspensions due to the pandemic. During times of loosened restrictions over the past two years, cruise ships have often been the sites of super-spreader events. At an astonishing 18-decks tall, the Wonder replaces sister ship Symphony of the Seas as the biggest ship of its kind, and also dwarfs the largest military ship in the world, the U.S.

Ovation of the Seas, Royal Caribbean

There’s the AquaDome, where one can find a food hall and an acrobatic sound-and-light aquatic show. Central Park has a premium steak house, a sushi joint, and a used Rolex that can be bought for $8,000 on land here proudly offered at $17,000. There’s the aforementioned Royal Promenade, where I had drunk with the Rands, and where a pair of dueling pianos duel well into the night. There’s Surfside, a kids’ neighborhood full of sugary garbage, which looks out onto the frothy trail that the behemoth leaves behind itself. Thrill Island refers to the collection of tubes that clutter the ass of the ship and offer passengers six waterslides and a surfing simulation. There’s the Hideaway, an adult zone that plays music from a vomit-slathered, Brit-filled Alicante nightclub circa 1996 and proves a big favorite with groups of young Latin American customers.

Costa Cruises Costa Toscana

The groundbreaking vessel was built at the STX shipyard in Turku, Finland. Oasis of the Seas also boasts features like the Zip-line and the AquaTheater. When Carnival Jubilee arrived in Galveston late in 2023, it became the largest and newest ship Carnival has ever cruised from that port. Attractions include the Bolt rollercoaster and a whopping 22 dining options, many of which are included in the cruise fare.

Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas

And though it had been trod hard by the world’s largest cruise ship, it remained. Cruise Addicts has rounded up and listed the worlds top ten biggest cruise ships in the world by gross tonnage (which is a measure of volume, and not weight). You will also find some other useful information and statistics to show incredible size these floating resorts have to offer guests. When it comes to the largest ships, Royal Caribbean is the undisputed leader with the six biggest cruise ships in the world. But the king of the fleet — and the largest cruise ship in the world — is Icon of the Seas.

Delivered in February 2022, Wonder of the Seas made her maiden voyage from Fort Lauderdale on March 4, 2022. Or play a lively game of glow-in-the-dark laser tag to battle for control of Planet Z—when the ship’s ice rink is temporarily transformed into an alien world, of course. Check out the Big Wonder, a seven-ton canopy lit with color-changing LEDs that cast a glow over the ship’s Solarium at night. After you’ve worked up an appetite in the pool, try one of Harmony of the Seas‘ twenty restaurants, serving over 200 different dishes on a daily basis. The Tidal Rum has partnered with P&O to produce the unique rum blend on the ship at Anderson’s Bar.

Symphony of the Seas was built at the then-named STX France shipyard and was delivered to the cruise line on March 23, 2018. The vessel departed on its first one-time special preview sailing on March 31, 2018. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) Encore is a part of the four-ship Breakaway Plus-class, a class known for mimicking small cities with numerous outdoor activities.

The ship sets sail as Royal Caribbean’s cruises are having a moment online. Since December, the company’s 9-month “Ultimate World Cruise” has captivated — and confused — a following of avid watchers on social media. Cruise ships are evaluated based on their gross registered tonnage, which despite its name is a volume calculation, basically how much inside space on a ship.

Central Park

The ship offers different experiences that include seven pools — one is the largest on any ship — the world's first onboard water park with six water slides, theaters, a casino and over 40 dining and drinking spots. The previous world’s largest cruise ship was also a Royal Caribbean vessel, Wonder of the Seas, which spanned 1,188 feet long and featured 18 decks. The world’s largest cruise ship is almost ready to set sail. MSC’s ship Virtuosa, built in 2020, is one of the newer offerings by the Swiss-Italian cruise line and is tied for number fourteen on our list of the world’s biggest cruise ships.

Allure of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)

There isn’t a holiday in the world that packs more adventure into one week than Oasis Class ships – Harmony®, Allure®, Symphony®, Oasis®, Wonder® and Utopia of the Seas℠. Discover why the largest cruise ships sailing to Caribbean and Europe holiday destinations are consistently awarded Best Ship year after year by Travel Weekly readers. As of February 2024[update], there are 68 passenger ships with over 135,000 GT in service. The first ships over that size were the Voyager-class ships from Royal Caribbean Group's Royal Caribbean International (RCI).

A full-fledged waterpark, seven different pools, and eight different neighborhoods offer a spot for everyone. P&O UK‘s newest ship Arvia is also the cruise line’s largest, and debuts at #7 on the 2023 list of biggest cruise ships. An Excel-class ship like Iona, Arvia is similar but boasts some key differences.

A totally redesigned pool deck with more ways to soak up the sun – or shade – than ever before. The most immersive AquaTheater ever, with a game-changing surround-stage that makes you feel like part of the action. The LNG powered Costa Toscana was built in 2022 and is one of the line’s Excellence Class ships.

That will be until the sister ship MSC World America arrives in 2025. Icon of the Seas is the first in its class and is powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas is the flagship of the Quantum class cruising Asia and the South Pacific half the year, before spending summer in Alaska. It made its maiden voyage in 2014 and holds 16 total decks (14 guest decks) and 2,094 staterooms.

All HAL ships have a dark blue hull with white superstructure, with the company's logo featured prominently on the functional smoke stacks. Amsterdam makes annual "Grand Voyages" lasting more than 60 days, including a grand circle of the Pacific Ocean each fall and a World Voyage sailing around the world, usually ranging from January to April/May. Some of Holland America's vessels are just 61,000 tons, which is as small as some of the vessels operated by much pricier, smaller lines such as Oceania Cruises or Azamara. The storied, Seattle-based cruise line now operates 11 vessels that can be bunched into just four groups. Don’t forget to pack something orange, a nod to the cruise line’s Dutch heritage.

Stop by the professionally staffed Fitness Center equipped with the latest cardio and weight machines. Try one of our classes on indoor cycling, Pilates and more or work out at your own pace.

The company's first ship was the original Rotterdam (1872), which sailed its 15-day maiden voyage from the Netherlands to New York City on October 15, 1872. But significantly, Koningsdam also sees the debut of a number of new features. All of Holland America's vessels offer send-out laundry, dry-cleaning and pressing services for a fee. There are no self-service laundry facilities on any of the line's ships.

The ship’s art collection is vast and varied, with pieces ranging from watercolor paintings to contemporary sculptures. The Mainstage offers a mix of entertainment, from live music to magic shows, ensuring you’re never short of options. Rotterdam, the seventh ship to bear this iconic name, made its debut in 2021. It continues Holland America’s legacy of mid-sized ships that focus on classic design elements with modern touches. The ship’s layout emphasizes spaciousness, allowing you to move comfortably throughout.

Please select your stateroom or suite type and room category from the available options. Our relaxing café with panoramic views is your home for handcrafted espresso drinks during the day and refreshing cocktails in the evening. Explore traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan with cuisine praised by Condé Nast Traveler as rivaling the top restaurants on land. Canaletto is a relaxed setting with authentic Italian cuisine that is best enjoyed when shared.

Here, the chefs celebrate the flavors of each port of call, with a selection of tasty dishes. We recommend the healthy salads made to order, the Asian food station and sweet treats. You can indulge in complimentary late snacks from 10.30 to 11.30 pm.

Signature Suites vary in size from 372 to 384 square feet and include binoculars for use during the cruise, premium bathrobes, a double sink, shower and full size whirlpool bath. Our aft stateroom, 5184, had two single beds made up as a queen-size bed with a comfortable sofa, chair and desk area with a stool. There was also a convenient curtain that you could pull across to separate the main cabin area from the hallway, which worked well to block out any light at night. The cabins on the Holland America Oosterdam are spacious and well-appointed, with a choice of interior staterooms, ocean view staterooms, and balcony staterooms. The cabins are elegant, with soothing colors, and many have a private verandah where you can relax and take in the views.

Numerous enrichment and entertainment activities keep guests going from the moment they wake on this cruise ship. When it comes to dining, there are options for everyone, from steak at the Pinnacle Grill to burgers and fries at Dive-In to exquisite Italian cuisine at Canaletto. Hear your favorite tunes all evening long at music clubs, such as the Rolling Stone Lounge and Billboard Onboard. Maasdam, known for its longer, exploratory voyages, offers a unique cruising experience that focuses on immersive travel. The ship’s size allows it to visit ports that larger ships can’t access, giving you the opportunity to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations. Onboard, the Exploration Central (EXC) program provides in-depth information about the regions you’re visiting, ensuring you get the most out of each port of call.

The oldest Holland America cruise ship is the 1,432-passenger Volendam. Unveiled in 1999, it's not just the oldest Holland America ship but the smallest Holland America ship. Measuring just 61,214 gross tons, it's 39% smaller than Rotterdam and the two other Pinnacle-class vessels mentioned above. Notably, in addition to a main restaurant and casual buffet, the three Pinnacle Class ships have five separate specialty dining venues — everything from a pan-Asian eatery and an Italian restaurant to a steakhouse. Measuring 99,863 gross tons, Rotterdam is tied with two slightly older sister ships (Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam) as the biggest ship in the Holland America fleet.
